5 Tips For Starting Out
What up beginner yogi!
Thank you for checking us out. I am super stoked to help you start your yoga practice and I want to share with you my top 5 tips for starting out. Let’s get started!
Let go of perfection
You are not coming to class to achieve some idea of a perfect pose or perfect yoga class. Perfection itself is subjective anyway. It doesn’t mean you won’t reach new heights/goals in each pose, it just means that your practice is not centered around an illusion. Perfection doesn’t exist and each student will experience the posses slightly differently. Pro tip: your physical practice changes as your mental practices evolves, not the other way around.
Use the dang blocks
I remember when I first started practicing I thought that needing a block meant that I was yoga challenged in some kind of way. Now? I use blocks every time I practice and I own a freaking yoga studio so if I say use the blocks, use the blocks. They are tools to help you get into the poses in different ways. No one views them as cheats because, remember #1, you can’t cheat when there is no standard of perfection or game to win. Practice for the sake of practicing.
Fully give it a chance
Practicing once is great and it probably took a lot to get to that one class. But to really experience transformation, you have to stay consistent and frequent. I recommend attending at minimum 2x per week. Enlist a buddy to go with you, schedule classes in advance, commit to this time.
Hydrate
Most of us are walking around slightly dehydrated on any given day. By the time you are thirsty, you are already dehydrated. Drink water throughout the day and feel better all day long and aquadup for class.
No expectations
If you can approach each class empty, without expectation, you are probably ready to teach me a thing or two. This one is super important and can help you in many life situations. Often times we form an idea of what we want to happen and when things don’t go according to plan, we become upset. The trick is to go in empty and fully experience what the universe is offering up to you, as it is. The moment you catch yourself holding your practice up to some idea of what you expected of yourself or what you expected the teacher to call or playlist or whatever, take a deep breath, and let. it. go.
