Life Lessons from the Dishes
Oh the dreaded dishes. You can learn a lot about life from the dishes. How many times have you caught yourself unable to relax in your home because of dishes in the sink? How many times have you been on the phone with someone and said, “Ugh, I have to do the dishes.”
The thing is, you don’t actually have to do the dishes. And ultimately, they are just objects in the sink - completely neutral.
Try this on for size next time you are in conversation with a friend, “I am going to choose to do the dishes later.” Watch how your energy is around the phrase. You will likely also get a confused response from the person you are talking to. Thing is- we choose to do the dishes because we want clean plates! We don’t have to do them. Once you take back ownership of the choices you are making, you take back your experience and your life. You either A - decide you are not going to do what you are doing anymore or B- do it with no resistance. Resistance creates unease while doing the dishes, in yoga poses, and in life.
Is there something that you are doing that you have a lot of resistance around? Is it something you need to stop doing or something you need to own as a choice you are making?
In practice on the mat, make the choice to choose the poses you are doing instead of resisting the pose. As Baron would say, “Be a yes for the pose!”. Notice how your experience shifts. You no longer “have” to do eagle pose, you choose to do it.
Namaste!
